Firebird: Remix | Response is a modern re-imagination of the ballet that launched Stravinsky into superstardom, combining the original orchestra with vocals, rap, drums (both acoustic and electronic) and female chorus. Steve Hackman composed a concept album based on the mythology of the Firebird and interpolating Stravinsky’s music, then wove that concept album back into the ballet. The music shifts throughout between Stravinsky’s original sound world and a modern, remixed response of it. Hackman’s re-imagination uses Prince Ivan’s search for the Firebird as a metaphor for the journey of the artist; themes that run throughout the work are the perception of time, process versus product, and gratitude.
